The Carpathian Mountains

The Carpathian Mountains arch around the heart of Romania, forming a natural fortress and protecting the country’s lands since antiquity, from the time of the Dacian Kingdom.

There are countless places to be seen and too many stories to be told in order to understand the vastness of the Carpathian Mountains. Just for a quick taste, you may consider the Bucegi Mountains with their unique rock formations called “Babele” and “The Bucegi Sphinx”, their famous Piatra Craiului ridge or Mount Omu.

In the southern Carpathians you may also find the massive Fagaras Mountains with Moldoveanu Peak, Balea Lake, Vidraru Dam and of course, the most beautiful road in the world – Transfagarasan. Speaking of alpine highways, let’s not forget about Transalpina – the highest road in Romania.

Other landmarks are places like Ceahlau Mountain, Retezat National Park, Cheile Bicazului (Bicaz Gorge), Pestera Muierii (cave), Bigar Waterfall, Scarisoara Cave and many, many more…The best part are the hidden gems: at least as beautiful and ready to be discovered.
